US Lacrosse named its 49 player training team on Wednesday. Four former Syracuse Orange players made the training squad.

Matt Abbott – M – Chesapeake Bayhawks

JoJo Marasco – M – Rochester Rattlers

Joel White – LSM – Rochester Rattlers

John Galloway – G – Rochester Rattlers

Originally, US Lacrosse invited 60 players to try out for the National Team. However, subsequently the organization offered 12 additional invites that included Sergio Salcido, Nick Mariano, and Scott Firman, none of whom made the training squad. It should also be noted that Kevin Rice did not get an invite, a pretty big snub in most people’s minds.

The FIL World Championships will be held in Israel starting on July 12, 2018 and the US team will be coached by John Danowski. The event had originally been awarded to England, but English Lacrosse withdrew after concerns about its ability to successfully host the event.

Matt Abbott, a member of the Orange between 2006 and 2009, won two National Championships with SU and picked up a career total 41 goals and 26 assists. Abbott was selected ninth overall in the 2009 MLL Draft and since 2012 has been a volunteer assistant with the Colgate Raiders. He was also a member of the 2014 US Men’s National Team and an alternate for the 2010 team.

Currently the head coach of the Jacksonville Dolphins, John Galloway had an incredible college career. Galloway started every game in his time at Syracuse other than an NCAA Tournament game against the Maryland Terrapins in 2010. He sits eighth all time in NCAA career goals against average with 7.33 and fourth in career minutes played and in the Syracuse records he is first in career GAA and ninth in career save percentage. He was taken 20th overall in the 2011 MLL Draft and was a member of the 2014 US Men’s National Team.

JoJo Marasco played for ‘Cuse between 2010 and 2013 totaling 68 goals and 87 assists and is tenth all time at Syracuse in career assists and tenth in career caused turnovers. In 2013 he was drafted 37th overall by the New York Lizards.

Joel White, the greatest long-stick midfielder in Syracuse history, played for the Orange between 2008 and 2011 winning two National Championships. He is fourth in the Syracuse records for career caused turnovers and was first in career groundballs prior to this year but was supplanted by Ben Williams.
