For the second straight week, Nick Mariano has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week. This time, however, he is joined by teammate Scott Firman who has been honored as the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week alongside Duke’s Kyle Rowe.
Mariano has been lighting up the scoreboard this season as the leading scorer for the Syracuse Orange, and last weekend he tagged the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for four goals including the eventual game winner with 8:42 left in the game. The senior was able to capitalize on Notre Dame’s decision to leave a shorty on him for much of the game. Just like last season, opponents are once again put into the unenviable position of having to chose whether to pole Sergio Salcido or Mariano, or put a long-pole on both and leave an attackman with a shorty.
On the other side of the field, Scott Firman played Ryder Garnsey tight all game. He held Notre Dame’s leading goal scorer, assister, and point scorer to just one goal, one assist, and two shots. The senior long-pole also had a caused turnover and two groundballs in the game and leads all SU players with nine caused turnovers.
This is the third and fourth time an SU player has been given an ACC weekly honor.
