Syracuse Lacrosse: Orange stumble downwards in polls

The Syracuse Orange took a hit in each poll this week after a one goal loss to the Army Black Knights.

NCAA Lacrosse: Semifinals - Johns Hopkins Blue Jays vs. Maryland Terrapins Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

For its 14-13 loss to the Army Black Knights, the Syracuse Orange fell in all three major polls this week leaving SU tenth in the Media Poll, 16th in the US Lacrosse Top 20, and tied for 12th in the USILA Poll. The Duke Blue Devils remain in the Media and USILA polls but continue to be left out of the US Lacrosse Top 20, even after a 16-3 win against St. Joseph’s. Carolina got spanked by Hopkins this weekend and fall out of the top five in each poll but still hold in the top ten of all three polls. Meanwhile, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish stays steady at the fourth position in each poll. Finally, the Virginia Cavaliers fall a few spots in every poll following a one goal loss to the Pennsylvania Quakers. The last time Virginia was ranked in the top ten of the media poll was back in week two of 2016 when the Cavaliers were ranked tenth.

Apparently the 19-8 win over Drexel wasn’t very impressive to the voters as the Albany Great Danes fall in two of three polls. The Black Knights had a huge win at Syracuse on Syracuse and enter each of the three rankings. And then there’s the Brown Bears which were held scoreless in the first period against Stony Brook on Saturday. Brown attempted a comeback and was able to put up 17 goals but couldn’t match the Seawolves’ 25 goal output. The Bears fell to 19th in the Media and US Lacrosse polls and dropped completely out of the USILA poll while Stony Brook entered each ranking.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are now 4-0 having scored a total of 73 points in those games. While its competition has not been stellar, PSU finds itself in the top five of all of the polls.
