For years I have been advocating that the Hopkins Blue Jays and Syracuse Orange rivalry game be moved. Sure it often conflicts with SU’s spring break, but we all know the student body only shows up when there are free t-shirts so that isn’t a huge deal anyway. But what is a big deal is that Bosses Desko and Pietramala have annually decided to schedule college lacrosse’s (pick an adjective) rivalry game squarely on the Saturday of St. Paddy’s Day Weekend. Season after season this decision has placed me SU lacrosse fans in the middle of an unholy dilemma, hit the local bar crawl or watch the game by yourself on the couch while receiving ostracizing texts from friends.
Finally, we have relief and it comes in the unlikely name of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. I talked about it in Tuesday’s blog covering media day, but it may have been glossed over. As coach Desko mentioned in his presser the other day, the SU women’s basketball team agreed to be a potential host in the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament on the same weekend as the Hopkins/Cuse game. This will result in this year’s game being played at Homewood Field for the second year in a row. In return, Hopkins will visit Syracuse in 2018 and 2019 to make everything right in the world again. To make sure that this does not happen again, following this year the game will take place on the second weekend of March instead of its usual third weekend of March which is normally the weekend of the St. John’s matchup.
So rejoice friends, we no longer have to choose between green beer and our favorite college lacrosse rivalry game.
