Syracuse Lacrosse: How would a two-pointer have affected the 2016 Orange?

With the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Rules Committee recommending that programs experiment with a two-pointer in fallball, I took a look at how such a rule would have altered the course of the 2016 Syracuse Orange.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Recently the NCAA Rules Committee recommended that programs experiment with two-point goals. Instead of recommending a two-point line, like the MLL uses, the NCAA s would like to experiment with a two-pointer awarded to teams that score within thirty seconds of gaining possession. For the most part, the lacrosse world reacted with a combined scoff. In my opinion this is an overcomplicated way to implement a two-pointer and bastardizes the game, but hey, try it out in fallball. What do we have to lose?

Nevertheless, I thought I would take a look at how such a rule would have affected the 2016 Syracuse Orange. I went through the play-by-play records of each game on SU's 2016 schedule to see what the results would be. Yes, I had some free time on my hands. Keep in mind, this was a rough overlook, but here are the highlights:

  • Syracuse's overall record goes from 12-5 to 13-4
  • Syracuse's regular season record goes from 9-4 to 11-2; the OT losses to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays and Duke Blue Devils both turn into regulation wins for Syracuse
  • Syracuse would have lost to Albany in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

As you can see below, the results don't really change but the implantation of the two-pointer does change the outcome in three games.
