Syracuse Men's Lacrosse: Third Across the Board

While Notre Dame continues its cruise to postseason play and the Syracuse Orange find themselves at third in the three major polls this week, the rest of the ACC is in disarray.

The three major polls were released on Monday afternoon. The Syracuse Orange sit at third in every poll, moving up two spots from fifth in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine rankings. The two big stories this week is the performance of the Ivy League and the set up for a #1 vs. #2 matchup between Notre Dame and Denver.

In the NIKE/USILA Coaches' Poll Syracuse remains at #3 after narrowly beating Virginia. Take note of how close the vote was between Syracuse and Yale. Both teams face St. John's this week, so I imagine next week's poll will come down to a comparison against the same Red Strom squad. At 2-3, the Cavaliers stay steady at #17. At the time the polls were released, Duke was 4-2, losing to Harvard last week. As a result, the Blue Devils fell to seventh. Interestingly enough, however, Duke still remains one position ahead of Harvard. On Monday night, Duke fell to the Richmond Spiders, but the Blue Devils have another game this week and will need to beat Loyola to avoid spiraling out of the top ten.

While Notre Dame remains second overall, the final ACC team, UNC, falls one spot after an overtime loss to Denver.

The biggest tumbler this week was Hofstra. The Pride took a beating in the polls after losing to a previously winless Georgetown team. Hofstra still has a win over UNC and a 3-1 record to protect its postseason chances.

For the second week in a row, the top three positions in the Cascade/Maverik Media Poll hold steady with Notre Dame, Denver, and the Syracuse Orange staying at one, two, and three respectively. The voters punished Virginia for the loss to Syracuse by dropping them three spots. Duke, meanwhile, falls five spots while UNC remains at tenth.

Towson was the biggest mover last week after taking down Loyola and UMBC. The Tigers are 5-0 and have a huge matchup against nearby rival Johns Hopkins this week. Loyola on the other hand, was able to stop the bleeding with a win over Holy Cross. The Greyhounds will take on a reeling Duke squad that, as mentioned before, fell at home to Richmond on Monday night.

In the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Poll, Maryland continues its slide. The Terrapins are 1-2 with both losses coming against top five programs. This week UMD faces Drexel and Princeton.

Previously, the voters in this poll were not sold on Harvard. It seems that this week, they have come around as the Crimson jump ten positions to #6. The squad sits one place ahead of Brown and two behind Yale, giving the Ivy League three, top ten teams in each poll.

As for the ACC, the only two programs making a move are Virginia which slips one spot to #14 and Duke which falls five spots to eighth. This has turned into a strange season for the Conference. I haven't heard much disagreement about the positioning of Notre Dame, and I think that the Irish definitely deserve either the first or second ranking, but after that, it is anyone's guess.
