It is just week three, but the Syracuse Orange seem to have already caught the injury bug. John Orsenigo addressed the recent injuries in his article yesterday, which was a great read by the way, but I thought the situation deserved an update today.
Graduate student Nick Piroli missed Sunday's game against the Albany Great Danes. Officially, Piroli is listed as week-to-week with a lower body injury. Coach John Desko addressed the Piroli injury saying that he expects him to be back this season. To me that means that it's a fairly significant injury and that we should not expect him on the field for some time.
Tim Barber was moved from the first midfield line to the attack line on Sunday, filling in for Piroli, but left the game after the first half when he took a nasty cross check at midfield. It took some time for Barber to get off the carpet but after being seen by the trainers he finally was able to get up on his own. The senior was on the sidelines for the second half but did not have his helmet on. It is purely speculation at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Barber injury is related to a concussion issue. Desko was not sure if Barber would be back for the Army game or not.
The good news is that Devin Shewell played well filling in at attack after Barber went down. The true freshman put away two goals on six shots in the 16-7 win over the Great Danes. Shewell played his high school lacrosse at Boys' Latin in Maryland, where he put up an impressive 75 points in his senior year. While this team has a lot of flexibility at the attack position given that so many of the midfielders have attack experience, the bigger issue is that the midfield crew may be somewhat depleted after the Barber injury.
Syracuse will host the Army Black Knights on Sunday at 4 PM. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3 and can be heard on TK99. Of course you can follow me @Orangelax for game updates.
