It took long enough, but we finally have the full schedule for Syracuse lacrosse. The first test for the Syracuse Orange will be its date with Albany. Don't look past this game, Albany has been picked to win the America East Conference and holds the 11th spot in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll. The Great Danes have two standout players returning in attackman Connor Fields and goalie Blaze Riorden, so this will be a good game to gauge where SU stands.
One of the most important games on the schedule is the early season matchup with Virginia. The Orange will travel to Charlottesville, VA for a Friday game, and I think it will be nearly a must-win for Syracuse considering the strength of Duke and Notre Dame. I believe that North Carolina, Syracuse, and Virginia could all be 1-1 in head-to-head games. I would say that UNC is a more balanced team than UVA, so I think getting a win over the Cavaliers is extremely important. Virginia features Matt Barrett, the best goalie in the ACC, and, I believe, in division I, so this will by no means be an easy game.
If I had to guess right now, I would expect the Orange to go 9-4 in the regular season with losses to Hopkins, Duke, Notre Dame, and UNC. That being said, my worst case scenario is SU also losing to UVA and Albany and going 7-6 in the regular season.
We will take a closer look at these teams as the season gets closer, so stay tuned.
