The Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team avoided a first round NCAA Tournament upset Sunday when they overcame a four-goal deficit to defeat Bryant. However, the top-seeded Orange couldn't avoid an upset by the Navy Midshipmen, who edged SU by one fan per game in this year's home attendance race.
According to D1scource.com, Navy (3-10) averaged 3,860 fans per game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md, while Syracuse (14-3) averaged 3,859 at the Carrier Dome.
The Midshipmen's home attendance title was propelled by a 12,000-fan showing for their last home game of the season against visiting Army, which earned a 14-7 victory. Their second-to-last home game against Maryland, which had nearly 7,000 fans attend (I'd guess a large majority of them were Terrapin fans) also helped propel the Mids to the crown.
In Navy's four other home games, it averaged 1,024 fans.
Meanwhile, the least attended home game for Syracuse was its March 29 showdown with Canisius -- 2,209 fans. The most attended game was the March 16 victory over John Hopkins -- 6,292.
All-in-all, I am calling shenanigans and the Orange should be crowned the winner.
