N.C. State Wolfpack blog: Backing the Pack

Rivalry: 10-2, N.C. State

Current Streak: 1, Syracuse

First Meeting: Back in 1972, the Wolfpack’s Lou Holtz defeated Ben Schwartzwalder and the Orange 43-20. Lou Holtz would defeat the Orange one more time before he moved on.

Last Meeting: Last season, Syracuse and N.C. State played a Saturday night barn burner that saw the Orange upset the Wolfpack 51-41. The win made the Orange Bowl eligible, and was generally a really good time to be an Orange fan.

Head Coaches: Syracuse — Dino Babers (4th year; 21-21) } NC State — Dave Doeren (7th year; 46-36)

Coach Bio: Doeren has been in Raleigh since 2013, after two seasons at Northern Illinois with 23 wins and an Orange bowl appearance. Doeren spent his first 16 years as a coach bouncing between position coaching positions and co-defensive coordinator positions. Before his position at Northern Illinois, Doeren was the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, so this little series between Dino and Doeren is a true clash of philosophies.

Last Year: The Wolfpack went 9-4, earning an invite to the Gator Bowl. If you’re new around here, this was a good thing for the Orange, as the Wolfpack were contenders to the Camping World Bowl slot the Orange ended up with. In 2018, State was undefeated before back-to-back loses on the road to Clemson and ‘Cuse. They dropped a home game to Wake Forest and their bowl game, holding them back from their second double digit season in program history.

Last Game: The Wolfpack had their dreaded game versus Bye Week U, but before that, the very confusing Florida State Seminoles defeated N.C. State, adding another data point to the whole “The ACC is a mess” narrative.

”Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Defensive tackle Larrell Murchison has five sacks on the season, one more than he had all of last season. The senior will challenge the Orange line (which has struggled mightily this year) all night long.

If Syracuse Wins: Things are certainty looking up for the Orange’s 2019. As John and Dan said on the podcast recently, we start moving towards the idea that ‘Cuse could rise to the top of this less than ideal ACC Atlantic.

If Syracuse Loses: Things aren’t terrible, but it’s going to be hard to calm the fan base down with an 0-2 start to conference play. The Pitt game will suddenly take on a whole new level of pressure for the Orange (it’s always pressure-packed for some reason, especially given how often we’ve lost to Pitt lately).

Fun Fact #1: Remember George McDonald? That guy is in his 5th year at NC State, and is now the co-offensive coordinator. Can the Orange slay both recent former OCs this season (they beat Tim Lester a few weeks ago if you forgot)?

Fun Fact #2: John will be at this game, so inevitably, whatever happens is all his fault.
