Three Orange Whips! Syracuse All But Wins Third-Straight Orange Eagle Trophy

Syracuse's 75-61 men's basketball victory over Boston College clinches the title for The Orange in the most lopsided contest in the competition's history.

What do you get when one athletic department is firing on all cylinders, while another appears to be using whatever working cylinder it has to create a makeshift beer funnel with which to drown its sorrows?

Friends, you get The 2015-2016 Orange Eagle Trophy Competition!!!

Led by Tyler Lydon's wispy whiskers, The Syracuse Orange basketball team took another 4.5 points off the Orange Eagle board, giving Syracuse a 74-12 lead over The Boston College Eagles, and effectively closed out the competition for another season.  27 points remain available for the two sides, and for BC to win, they need to sweep the remaining competitions, AND have their men's AND women's ice hockey teams win the NCAA championship, THEN have their women's lacrosse team win the ACC and NCAA championships (just to eek-out a one-point victory, mind you).

Vegas isn't even taking odds on that happening, so I'm calling this one a TKO.  Syracuse's historic NCAA titles in field hockey and men's cross country put The Orange in the driver's seat heading into the second semester, and The Eagles have been unable to respond to the onslaught.  Let's recap the last few contests that definitively put another engraving on the TNIAAM-side of the trophy base:

Syracuse just keeps rolling on with wins in men's, women's basketball

Jan 13, 2016 - Men's Basketball:  Syracuse 62, Boston College 40.

Syracuse used a 14-0 run in the final three minutes of the first half to break open a tight contest, and cruised to their first ACC Conference victory against The Eagles at the Carrier Dome.  Malachi Richardson was still in the holiday spirit for 'Cuse, going all "Malachi-likimaka" on BC (Malachi-likimaka is the Hawaiian way of saying "Merry Christmas fools..I'm dropping 15, 3 and 3 on y'all") for a team high 15 points.  Three other Orange scored in double-figures as SU got back to their winning ways following a four game ACC losing streak.

Jan 27, 2016 - Women's Basketball:  Syracuse 62, Boston College 61.

While the BC men laid down meekly against The Orange two weeks earlier, The Eagles' women's team gave the favored Orange all they could handle at the Carrier Dome.  With the game tied and in possession, BC drove to the SU basket with seconds remaining, but their layup attempt was stopped cold by 6'4" Junior Briana Day who rejected the shot, grabbed the rebound, and sent it out to Senior guard Cornelia Fondren in transition.  Fondren was fouled with under three seconds to play, and proceeded to hit one of two free throws to give SU a gritty one point win and three more Orange Eagle points.

Feb 14th - Men's Basketball:  Syracuse 75, Boston College 61.

Already up 69.5 - 12 in the Orange Eagle competition, Jim Boeheim's resurgent men's basketball team effectively sang The Eagles a lullaby, tucked them in nice and tight, and gently put them to sleep for another season.  That lullaby?  Oh, it was the loud chants of LET'S GO OR-ANGE from the overwhelmingly pro-'Cuse crowd at Manley Field House of Greater Boston (a.k.a. Conte Forum).  Tyler Lydon's career-high 20 points, and 8 of 10 shooting from behind the 3 point arc in the second half broke open a tight game.  BC freshman Matt Milon did his best to keep The Eagles in the game with 20 points on 4-4 shooting from three point land, but his solo Milon-man march was not enough to topple the balanced Orange, who won their fifth-straight ACC contest and took the Orange Eagle lead to 74-12.

With the contest wrapped up for another season, Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician keeps the trophy, and gets yet another year to gloat over rivals BC Interruption.  Proud as they are, BC will make a game of it till the end, and may just pick up some bonus points off the back of their strong ice hockey programs.  We'll keep tallying up the points in our quest to see if SU breaks the 100-point mark (Taco Time!!!), so stay tuned as we put the icing on an Orange-flavored cake and reach the conclusion of another season of The Internet's Oldest and Most Storied College Rivalry Trophy Involving an Orange-hued Bird of Prey (Copyright 2016, TNIAAM, BC Interruption).

Bye for now Orange and Eagle friends!!!
