Get To Know Your Orange Man - #2 Quinta Funderburk

If Funderburk becomes a contributor this year, can we call him and Kobena/Clark/Estime "Funder and Lightning"? No? You're no fun.

Why don't we get a crazy hair-style, Quinta? Huh?
Why don't we get a crazy hair-style, Quinta? Huh?

Name: Quinta Funderburk

Position: Wide Receiver

Year: Junior

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 201

Hometown: Norfolk, VA

High School: Oscar F. Smith

2012 Stats: He sat out after transferring from Arkansas.

2013 Projections: Funderburk's career here at has been tumultuous thus far. After failing to earn a waiver last year, there was word that he looked good in practice all fall, but of course, he couldn't play. Then come Spring time, he sat out due to academic concerns, and now he can't seem to gain a foothold in a wide receiver unit when there is all the opportunity in the world for someone to really step up and become a difference maker. I don't know what to make of Funderburk this season, but the talent is there... hopefully he can make a Marcus Sales-like transformation and break out for Syracuse sometime soon.

How'd He Get Here?: Quinta is a friend and high school teammate of defensive back Jaston George, so when he was looking to move on from Arkansas, Syracuse was an attractive landing spot.

What'd Scout/Rivals Say?: Four stars from Scout, ESPN, and 247. Three from Rivals.

Money Quote:

"I was focused on ― if I had to sit out (last year) ― working on getting on the field this year," Funderburk said in a slow, syrupy southern drawl. "I'm still working hard to get on the field, so that's my expectation."

Links of Wonder: Michael Cohen wrote a very timely article on the Funderburk mystery just yesterday.

Tweets of Wonder: Quinta was on twitter at one time, as @Bird757.  When he was leaving Arkansas, he tweeted this:

@Bird757: The Worlds Gonna Hate Me After What I’m About To Do.. But Hey Can’t Please Everyone Gotta Do What’s Best For Me…

For some reason, I don't think @Bird757 is still Quinta...

What Does Shafer Think:

"I think preconceived expectations you always have to be careful with. Quinta has done a good job. He's gotten better. He's become more self-reliant and more responsible and mature with a lot of the things he's doing both on and off the football field. I think he's progressing... We just have some guys that have played a little bit better, in our opinion, going into this first game."

Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Funderburk's four stars ranking from those sites was not unwarranted. Dude could ball in high school. During his junior and senior seasons, he amassed stat lines of 62/1,150/12 and 65/1,464/15. In high school, receivers don't have the luxury of good quarterback play all of the time, and great receivers often see a drop in production from junior to senior year (check Alvin Cornelius' numbers) because defenses design entire schemes around stopping them. Funderburk's numbers got better, which is impressive.
