Get to Know Your Orange Man - #83 Sean Avant

Syracuse was big in the Miami area in this most recent recruiting cycle, and added wide receiver Sean Avant as one of the final members of the 2013 class.

Name: Sean Avant

Position: Wide Receiver/H-Back

Year: Freshman

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 183

Hometown: Miramar, FL

High School: Miramar

2012 Stats: As a senior, he caught 24 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

2013 Projections: Avant is currently behind Ashton Broyld and Brisly Estime in the 'H-Back' column of the depth chart, so it will be interesting to see what the coaches have in store for him. While Broyld is a powerful runner with his big 6'4" frame, and Estime has elite speed, Avant seems to be more of a possession type receiver.

How'd He Get Here?: Avant was committed to FIU until Mario Cristobal was fired, and seemed to be scrambling to figure out his next move when Scott Shafer and George McDonald swooped in with an offer. According to the recruiting services, he had interest from Louisville, and offers from Wake Forest and West Virginia among others.

What'd Scout/Rivals Say?: Two stars from Scout and 247, three from Rivals and ESPN.

Money Quote:

"I came from the bottom," Avant said. "I always had the talent, but my head wasn't always on straight. For me to be focused and humble to go through all this recruiting process and getting on the team and pouring my heart in it, I'm proud of myself accomplishing these things and leaving Miami, which is very hard to do for some people. I just came from where they least expect."

Links of Wonder: Nate Mink on Avant's long and winding road to Syracuse.

What Does Shafer Think:

"(Shafer) was like, 'Well, heck,' " Avant said. "He just went for me. I told him I'm coming. He was like, 'We got a full ride scholarship for you. You gotta come here and work your butt off.' And I think I can come in and start as a true freshman."

Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Avant attended the same high school as current Syracuse cornerback Keon Lyn and former Syracuse tackling dummy Geno Smith.
