Syracuse has loaded up on a number of JuCo defensive linemen over the last few years. Get to know one of the newest additions, Tyler Marona.
Name:
Tyler Marona
Position:
Defensive Line
Year:
Sophomore
Height:
6'4"
Weight:
258
Hometown:
St. Francis, CA
High School:
St. Francis
2012 Stats:
Tyler spent last year at Pasadena Community College, where he tallied 25 total tackles (4.5 TFL), and two sacks.
2013 Projections:
The biggest area of concern for Syracuse this year is at defensive end, so there is playing time to be had for Marona. Right now he's listed fourth on the depth chart behind Robert Welsh and Ron Thompson, but I wouldn't be overly surprised if Marona was able to get into the rotation this year.
How'd He Get Here?:
Tyler went underrecruited because of his size, but after jumping up to nearly 6'5" and over 250 lbs, schools like Colorado, Maryland, and Miami began knocking on his door. Tim Daoust and Syracuse made an offer in early April, and were able to land the defensive end.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say?:
Unsurprisingly, the recruiting sites didn't know much about the under-the-radar Marona, and none rated him.
Money Quote:
From an Orange Fizz post on Marona:
"I twitched my eyebrows watching (Pinstripe Bowl). When the season was all said and done, I actually thought about the idea of getting a chance to play there. They play real hard. Guys like Ryan Nassib and the rest of them showed how tough they are and play every play hard."
Links of Wonder:

What Does Shafer Think:
No specific quotes, but the Syracuse.com article describes how Marona was a good multi-sport athlete, which is something that Shafer thinks can be an advantage for a player in developing his athleticism.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Marona's trip to Community College had nothing to do with grades, it was all about getting more exposure growing into his frame. He was fully qualified out of high school and plans to double major in business and economics at Syracuse.
