Get to Know Your Orange Man: #8, DB Justin Barron

The senior leads the SU secondary after a career year

NCAA Football: Boston College at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

It’s time to start preparing for the 2024 Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get to know a lot of new faces to kick off the Fran Brown Era.

Next up is...

Name: Justin Barron

Position: Defensive Back

Year: Senior

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 231 lbs

Hometown: Rocky Hill, Connecticut

High School: Suffield Academy

2023 stats: 13 starts at rover, 90 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles, fumble recovery, seven pass breakups.

2024 projections: After much thought, Barron decided to return to SU and the rover position under new defensive backs coach Joe Schaefer. Barron finished second on the team in tackles last season, and should certainly come up near the top in takedowns again this time around. The return of Duce Chestnut at free safety should also help out the senior, keeping him locked into his rover role.

How’d he get here?: Chose the Orange over offers from Pittsburgh, Virginia, Boston College and his hometown, UConn.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars across the board.

If this doesn’t get you fired up about his return to the Orange, I don’t know what will:

Interesting nugget: Barron’s 90 tackles in 2023 were the most by a Syracuse defensive back in over 25 years, (Joe Fields - 97, 1997). Oh yeah, and he did that with a broken hand.
