Syracuse football: Joe Schaefer hired as defensive backs coach

Another Texas A&M coach heads North

The Syracuse Orange are filling out the defensive coaching staff as we begin 2024.

Head Coach Fran Brown announced that Texas A&M Aggies assistant Joe Schaefer would join the Orange as the defensive backs coach. Schaefer spent the last two seasons with new Syracuse defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson and that connection brought him to Brown’s attention.

“Joe Schaefer is really intelligent and can see things from both sides of the football,” Brown said. “He also understands how to make the backend and frontend match up. Not a lot of coaches can do that. He has unique ability when it comes to teaching and having people be able to gravitate towards him and understand what he’s thinking and why he’s thinking it....”

Schaefer was the Aggies linebacker coach last season and prior to his time in College Station he was the defensive coordinator for Youngstown State and John Carroll University. He also served as the Director of Recruiting for Iowa State for two seasons.

During his playing days, Schaefer was a linebacker for Bowling Green and a two-year starter. He’ll be taking over the position group with some experienced players in returning starters Justin Barron and Alijah Clark along with veteran transfers Duce Chestnut and Devin Grant.

We expect a lot more coaching announcements heading our way next week so stay tuned.
