Syracuse men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Duke

Can the Orange keep it rolling on the road?

NCAA Basketball: Pittsburgh at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse Orange (10-3, 1-1) are in Durham tonight to take on the #16 Duke Blue Devils (9-3, 0-1). This is another opportunity at a Quad One win for the Orange as they look to build a NCAA Tournament resume.

Here’s what we think will happen tonight:

Kevin: Duke 77, Syracuse 68

It’s going to be interesting to see how this younger Orange group handles their 2nd ACC road game. Syracuse fell apart at Virginia so I’ll be hopeful that this one is much closer. Kyle Filipowski’s a difficult match-up for Syracuse so it’ll be important for Maliq Brown to avoid foul trouble as he’s likely to draw that assignment. This is a Duke team that is shooting nearly 50% from the field so the Syracuse defense is going to have to communicate well and try to force the Blue Devils into turnovers to have a chance.

Dom: Duke 82, Syracuse 70

Like Kevin, I’m curious to see how this Syracuse team can control itself in what’s always a chaotic road environment down at Duke and especially after that collapse versus Virginia. The Blue Devils boast a lot of scoring pop across the board, and unlike the Pitt game, I don’t think Syracuse can afford to shoot 17% from three and expect to win. If the Orange’s perimeter wings (namely Bell, Taylor, Williams and Brown) can’t do much to control the glass or keep Duke’s defense honest, this could get ugly fast.

Finn: Duke 75, Syracuse 62

Just looking at this matchup gives me flashbacks to the 21-22 season where Duke destroyed the Orange in the Dome. Similarly to that Duke team, the 23-24 incarnation boasts length, height, and plenty of NBA-caliber talent. On top of this, Syracuse hasn’t won a game in regulation time against Duke since 2017. The historic precedent and level of talent on the court alone would give most enough reason to side with Duke, and that's still ignoring the fact that the Devil's point differential is double that of the Orange.

Max: Duke 79, Syracuse 65

SU’s five-game winning streak comes to an end. This is another “measuring stick” game against one of the nation’s bests for Syracuse, similar to Maui Invitational contests against Tennessee and Gonzaga. Durham’s atmosphere is daunting, and while Judah Mintz can keep the Orange in it to start, a second-half collapse is most likely in the cards. Duke is very efficient on offense with five players averaging over 10 points per game, and they can hurt you down low and behind the arc. And after seeing what happened in Charlottesville a month ago to a worse Virginia team, I can only think that history will repeat itself.

Mike: Duke 77, Syracuse 62

We’re all either disloyal idiots or realists... the outcome will decide. But it’s not easy to see SU scraping bye here unless Duke is the one making mistakes. ‘Cuse has gotten lucky several times with opponents firing bricks instead of baskets, but the Blue Devils are built to shell the hoop from all over the court. This game starts the roughest portion of the entire schedule, so don’t panic if the Orange don’t pull off the massive upset - they’ll have other chances for quality wins.

Szuba: Duke 82, Syracuse 72

Syracuse has played well of late but the five-game winning streak will snap tonight. Duke does a lot of things well and Filipowski is a matchup problem that I don’t think Syracuse has an answer for and if they do, Jeremy Roach is a veteran and Jared McCain has been hot. It will also be the first time in Cameron for all the sophomores on this team, which can be an intimidating place to play — only Naheem McLeod and Benny Williams have played in a game at Duke. The Blue Devils don’t rebound it like Pitt, but they take care of the ball and run offense as good as anyone. For those reasons, Syracuse comes up short.
