Syracuse men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Oregon

We missed out on Cup de Guerrier

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Georgetown Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse Orange (7-3) head to South Dakota on Sunday to take on the Oregon Ducks (7-2) with an opportunity to grab a strong non-conference win over the soon to be Big 10 Ducks.

Here are our predictions:

Dom: Oregon 80, Syracuse 71

I could see the offenses cooking for both sides in this one, and I don’t think scoring will necessarily be the problem for Syracuse. My main concern is defense: the Orange were thankful that in their last game, Georgetown shot 5/26 from three. Oregon is a much better outside shooting team, and a quick scoring run by Oregon puts this game out of reach at the wrong time.

Kevin: Syracuse 82, Oregon 80

I’m drinking the orange optimism this week. Oregon’s got a strong perimeter game, but if N’Faly Dante is unable to play, then Syracuse could have an edge on the inside (weird right?) as the Ducks are limited in forward depth. If Justin Taylor and Chris Bell can find their shooting range, this could be a strong Q2 win for Adrian Autry’s crew.

Mike: Syracuse 80, Oregon 75

Perimeter shooting is going to be an issue to defend, but in nearly every other area of play, even rebounding, the Orange have the advantage. Call it a gut feeling, but playing in a gym 1/10th the size of the Dome will calm the nerves of SU’s streaky starters, help them forget the implications of this game, and allow them to just play clean, inspiring basketball.

Max: Syracuse 84, Oregon 79

I’m rolling with the Orange it what should be a high-scoring affair. The Ducks’ offense looks a little better on paper, but their defense has been horrendous. In its three neutral site games this season, Oregon’s allowed an average of 86 points per contest. This feeds right into SU’s fast-moving offense and should wear the Ducks down as the game goes on.

Szuba: Oregon 82, Syracuse 79

Syracuse has a chance here but Oregon is strong on both ends of the floor. Plus, the Ducks are a veteran team with seven of its top nine players as upperclassmen. I think that will spell trouble for an Orange team that has had trouble putting together games for a full 40 minutes. Syracuse should be able to compete but Oregon will be able to score and edge out a win with a balanced attack.

Now it’s your turn
