Head Coaches: Syracuse - Adrian Autry (first year, 4-2) | LSU - Matt McMahon (second year, 18-21)

Coach Bio: McMahon played his college basketball at Appalachian State. He stayed there as a student assistant for a year before joining his former head coach, Buzz Peterson, at Tennessee as a grad assistant. McMahon’s first full-time assistant jobs were at Appalachian State, UNC Wilmington, and at Murray State. After four seasons with the Racers, McMahon took over as Murray State’s head coach, after former head man Steve Prohm left for Iowa State.

After two average seasons, Murray State exploded under McMahon, winning at least 23 games in four of the next five seasons. The middle of that stretch most notably featured Ja Morant’s breakout second season with the Racers, which included an upset win over Marquette in the NCAA Tournament. McMahon’s last season with Murray State was during the 2021-22 season, when the Racers won 31 games, earned a seven seed in the NCAA Tournament, and advanced to the Round of 32 for the second time under McMahon. After that successful season, McMahon was hired by LSU to take over full time after Will Wade was fired for cause due to recruiting violations.

Last Year: Adversity immediately hit LSU to start McMahon’s tenure, as 11 LSU players entered the transfer portal or the NBA Draft within a month of his hiring. Despite the roster turnover, the season started well, with the Tigers going 12-1, including an upset win over No. 9 Arkansas. However, the bottom fell out as LSU lost 14 straight games right afterwards. The Tigers lost 17 of their last 18 games to close the regular season, Despite a first-round win over Georgia in the SEC Tournament, the season unceremoniously ended with a loss to Vanderbilt in the second round. LSU ended with a 14-19 record in McMahon’s first season.

Last Game: A strong first half saw LSU hold North Florida to only 20% shooting from the floor, giving the Tigers an 18-point lead at halftime. However, the Ospreys exploded in the second half from distance, going 8-18 (44.4%) from beyond the arc. LSU barely kept up with North Florida to win 75-63.

“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Will Baker originally played at Texas and Nevada before settling at LSU. The 7-footer is pacing the Tigers on both sides of the floor. He leads the Tigers with 16.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.

If Syracuse Wins: Should’ve lured Joe Girard away from Clemson to help.

If Syracuse Loses: So if you’re not using Duce Chestnut, consider this our payment for getting him back for our football team?

Fun Fact: You think Judah Mintz is having fun? He’s scored at least 20 points in four of Syracuse’s six games so far this season.
