Day & Time: Saturday, November 25, 2:00 pm ET
Location: JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Line: Despite the head coaching change, the line has stayed steady in favor of Syracuse. The Orange are three-point favorites according to DraftKings.
TV/Streaming: The CW
Rivalry: 6-6, Tied
Current Streak: 3, Wake Forest
First Meeting: The first meeting between the two programs was a fairly recent contest in Winston-Salem to open the 2006 season. Syracuse’s offense was anemic with only 136 yards of total offense as the Orange lost 20-10 to the Demon Deacons (thanks GERG).
Last Meeting: Syracuse led by 11 in the first half, but two Wake Forest scores in the last five minutes of the half gave the Demon Deacons all they needed to win 45-35 over the Orange in Winston-Salem. On the bright side, Sean Tucker eclipsed 3,000 career rushing yards in that game.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Nunzio Campanile (interim, 0-0) | Wake Forest - Dave Clawson (10th year, 63-60)
Coach Bio: Clawson’s head coaching career started with Fordham in the FCS in 1993. He moved on to Richmond in 2004 before moving to Tennessee in 2008 to replace David Cutcliffe as the Volunteers offensive coordinator. Clawson was fired after that season by Lane Kiffin and subsequently moved to Bowling Green in 2009. He led the Falcons to three bowl games in five years which earned him his first FBS head coaching job with Wake Forest in 2014. The Demon Deacons initially struggled under Clawson before making bowl games in the last seven seasons.
Last Year: While Wake Forest didn’t reach the same heights of the ACC Championship in 2021, the Demon Deacons continued playing as a solid mid-tier conference team. Wake finished the regular season 8-4, with a notable win over No. 23 Florida State. The Demon Deacons defeated Missouri in the Gasparilla Bowl 27-17.
Last Game: Wake’s quest for an eighth straight bowl game under Dave Clawson was snapped last week as the Demon Deacons dropped their seventh game of the season. No. 19 Notre Dame ran Wake Forest out of South Bend with a thumping 45-7 win.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: The best part of this Wake team in a down year for the program is its run defense. The unit is led by Jasheen Davis, who leads the ACC with 16 tackles for loss. He also has 7.5 sacks, good for fifth in the ACC.
If Syracuse Wins: So New Jersey was the answer? Always.
If Syracuse Loses: Well switching to Army’s offense was fun while it lasted.
Fun Fact: For those not familiar with Syracuse’s interim head coach, this is not Campanile’s first time taking over leadership in emergency fashion. He was named interim head coach of Rutgers in 2019 after the Scarlet Knights fired Chris Ash four games into the season. Campanile only went 1-7 with a win over Liberty in his time as Rutgers interim head coach.
