Syracuse women’s basketball: Weekly TNIAAM Awards and ACC Update for November 22nd

Non-conference chaos continues for Syracuse and the rest of the ACC.

The dust finally settled with week two action for the Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team, which means it’s time for another edition of our weekly recap.

Per usual, we’ll be discussing the past week of Syracuse action and what comes next for Felisha Legette-Jack and company, as well as the latest across the rest of the ACC landscape.

Let’s jump right in:

The Orange this week and next week

Note: All team records include games from up to and including Monday, November 20.

Syracuse split its two games this past week, first defeating Coppin State 80-47 at home before just coming up just short on the road against then-ranked Maryland in a nail-biting 83-81 loss.

The journey away from the 315 continues for the Orange — after Thanksgiving Day, Syracuse will play back-to-back games in the regular season for the first time in the Legette-Jack era. Syracuse will head out west to Las Vegas and compete against Northern Iowa (1-2) on Friday and Iowa State (2-1) on Saturday as part of the 2023 South Point Shootout.

The TNIAAM Orange Player of the Week

This week’s winner: Georgia Woolley

This is very much a contentious pick considering that a) Woolley only played in the Maryland game and b) two of Syracuse’s other starters (Alaina Rice and Izabel Varejão) each had strong cases of their own.

With that said, even with Dyaisha Fair struggling to get anything going offensively versus the Terrapins, the Orange were able to keep things remotely close thanks to Woolley back in the lineup. Not only that, but a stat line of 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals against a borderline-AP top 25 team and in her first game back is pretty impressive no matter how you put it.

Bracketology Update

New category? That’s right — barring any unforeseen disaster, Syracuse will be squarely in the NCAA Tournament bubble conversation from now until the ACC Tournament. It’s never too early to start monitoring the outlook for the Orange’s tournament aspirations (writer’s note: this will also help to contextualize Syracuse’s future opponents, especially in the ACC).

Speaking of, Syracuse jumped a spot from its previous ranking and is now projected to be the very last team to make the 2024 NCAA Tournament, according to the latest bracketology update from ESPN’s Charlie Creme.

With the Orange moving up this week, eight teams in the ACC are now projected to make this year’s tournament, which is the third-most out of any conference behind the Pac-12 and Big Ten. Duke, Virginia and Miami are the notable opponents for the Orange who find themselves around the bubble.

ACC power rankings and a look around the conference

Note: All team records include games from up to and including Monday, November 20.

Six teams are off to fast starts to begin this season and remain undefeated up to this point: Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Miami (all but the Hurricanes are 4-0). Notre Dame has won three-straight after losing its season-opener, while Duke dropped two games in a row to Davidson and #4 Stanford.

Here are the updated conference standings as of Monday night:
