Pre-Season Football Stats for Nerds

I present to you hours of number crunching for your viewing pleasure. Stats compiled from previous year of player rating from Pro Football Focus in accordance with Phil Steele's projected starting positions for the upcoming season. These are for Syracuse and upcoming opponents minus Uconn and Wagner. Offense first, Defense to come soon!

Some notes on methodology:

-QB rating based on projected QB1 starter.

-RB rating based on projected RB1 starter.

-TE/WR rating based on 3 best players out of 4 man group.

-Tackles rating based on projected top 2 starting tackles.

-Guards/Center rating based on top 2 guards and top center.

-Overall rating based on average of all 5 groups.

-Some teams had massive holes (Virginia) and holes were assigned lowest rating among the entire position group.

-Sam Hartman is included for Wake Forest

Here is the big time grade summary first for offense:

Some takeaways for each team starting from the bottom

Syracuse - Sean Tucker was penalized heavily by PFF for his poor pass blocking and mediocre receiving ability, although he is among the best pure runners in the league. All other positions are very mediocre, for what is expected to be the weakest offense on this list besides Virginia.

Virginia - Speaking of the devil, this team has the best QB and the best WR group in combination with a non existent running game and an offensive line that would make any Bronco want to resign. Probably not a functional offense at this point with sacks ruining what would be an amazing passing attack.

Clemson - PFF hates Will Shipley for some reason that I can't explain, and also thinks that DJ is an awful QB that passes worse that Shrader and is basically immobile on top of that. Additionally the Clemson receivers are very unproven or did no favors for DJ. The o-line is their strength.

Boston College - Average at everything with bad tackles. PFF thinks Garwo and Flowers are both overrated.

Purdue- See Virginia, except with a better o-line and slightly better running game at the expense of WR quality.

NC State - This low? Mostly average at everything with a questionable running game. PFF doesn't seem to like Leary, although they do have one of the better o-lines on this list.

Florida St - PFF is crazy about QB Travis as well as RB Ward, who is good at everything including pass blocking and catching. The WRs and o-line? Well that's a mediocre mess.

Notre Dame- A really good tight end and an absolutely elite o-line headline the team overshadowed by an inexperienced QB/RB group. Almost the complete opposite of FSU.

Pittsburgh- See Boston College, average at everything but with better tackles. Balanced with no real weaknesses.

Wake Forest- With Sam Hartman, the second best offense. Without him? Who knows?

Louisville - The cream of the crop. A tier above everyone else. It surprised me just how stacked at every position this team is. Cunningham has an embarrassment of riches to work with. This is the type of offense that wins conference championships. Expect 40 plus points per game.

I hope you enjoyed this, remember don't take it too seriously, and anything can happen in a new season. Until next time.
