In a move that has been called for by many over the years the Syracuse Orange have announced that four former athletes will have their jerseys retired in the upcoming 2021-22 season. Gary Gait (M. Lacrosse), Felisha Legette-Jack (W. Basketball), Anna Goodale (W. Rowing) and Katie Rowan Thomson (W. Lacrosse) will be the next alumni honored in the Carrier Dome. This will be the first time that a Syracuse women’s athlete will be recognized in this manner.
Buffalo shared a video of their head coach receiving the phone call that informed her of the honor (would have been nice if Syracuse had this video first but it’s still great to watch).

Syracuse didn’t announce when these honors would take place but Legette-Jack is going to be honored on campus during the Coming Back Together event on September 11th. With the Orange football squad hosting Rutgers that day it would make sense to unveil Legette-Jack’s jersey then, unless there is a plan for the Orange and Bulls to play each other this season.
Since both Gait and Rowan will be coaching their respective lacrosse teams during the Spring it would make sense to also honor them before the New Year during either a home football or basketball game.

With Goodale being a 2008 Olympic gold medal winner it might be nice to honor her along with the Syracuse alums who competed in Beijing this summer. That could be a logistical nightmare but if Syracuse can pull it together it would certainly be a great ceremony.
This announcement stated that these will be the jersey retirements for the year so we’ll hope that means this will become an annual affair. Now that some women will be honored in the Dome we expect more to follow and hopefully this means Syracuse is moving towards their own Ring of Honor in the updated Carrier Dome.
