Name: Steven Mahar Jr.
Position: Tight end
Year: Freshman
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 225 lbs.
Hometown: Rochester, N.Y.
High School: Aquinas Institute
2020 stats: Despite being an offensive player, Mahar’s only stats were tackles. He had one while appearing in nine games on special teams last year.
2021 projections: If Syracuse can get use two tight ends at all, having Mahar and Luke Benson out there could create a lot of mismatches. A lot probably depends on how much the offensive line is improved, though. If it isn’t, you’ll see a lot more Chris Elmore as a blocker. If it is, prepare to see more Mahar given his good mix of size and speed.
How’d he get here?: Mahar was an in-demand prospect, with offers from Boston College, Indiana, Iowa State, Pitt, Rutgers and various others. But he picked the team from nearby Syracuse, thankfully!
What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars, said everyone.
Money quote: From the Democrat and Chronicle after he committed — it seemed like the home state connection did play a role for Steven.
“It’s special, man. I’ll be able to rep my home state in the ACC conference. To rep New York state means a lot.”

Tweets of wonder: These early signing period graphics were so great.
A tight end who’ll stretch the defense and is one of the top-rated recruits in NY is staying home.

What movie would Dino recommend for him?: While we’re partial to MCU films for Marvel characters, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (not MCU and with Andrew Garfield) filmed parts of the movie in Rochester. I certainly wouldn’t recommend the movie for its quality. But it would be fun to spot some local streets in the movie, I’m sure.
Interesting nugget o’interest: Last year, Mahar was actually the first Rochester player to suit up for the Orange since Ashton Broyld in 2014. Makes some sense given the program’s recruiting expansion beyond New York state in recent years.
Let’s get a look at ya: Here’s Steven in action senior year.
