Rivalry: 6-4, Clemson

Current Streak: 2, Clemson

First Meeting: December 2, 1960 featured the first game between the two programs. The Tigers, led by head coach Press Maravich, won 78-67 over the Orange during the Kent State Tournament to start the season. Pete Chudy led Syracuse with 19 points.

Last Meeting: Syracuse did hold a double-digit lead in the second half against Clemson on January 28, 2020. However, the Tigers went to ol’ faithful against the zone: the high post. Clemson clawed back into the game and took the lead late. A weird series of in-bound plays from the Orange meant that a last-second heave from Elijah Hughes would not fall, giving the Tigers a 71-70 win.

Head Coaches: Syracuse - Jim Boeheim (45th year, 1,075-404) | Clemson - Brad Brownell (11th year, 192-147)

Coach Bio: Brownell played his collegiate basketball at D-III DePauw before moving into coaching. His first job was as an assistant for his hometown university in Evansville for a season. Brownell then moved to the University of Indianapolis for two seasons before joining the staff at UNC Wilmington. He would later become the head coach of the Seahawks in 2002 and went to two NCAA tournaments with the program in four seasons. Brownell then took the head coaching job at Wright State. He led the Raiders to an NCAA tournament appearance in his first season and won at least 20 games in each of his four seasons with Wright State.

Brownell took the head coaching job at Clemson in 2010 and much like his previous two jobs, led the Tigers to an NCAA tournament appearance in his first season with the team. The Tigers made one more NCAA tournament appearance under Brownell in 2018 and won at least 20 games in four seasons.

Last Year: Clemson regressed during the 2019-20 season, winning four less games than the previous season. The Tigers did pick up three ranked wins in the season over No. 3 Duke, No. 5 Louisville, and No. 6 Florida State. Clemson earned the eight-seed in the ACC tournament and won its first game against Miami. The Tigers wouldn’t get the chance to play Florida State again due to the event’s cancellation.

Last Game: Clemson clamped down defensively and held North Carolina to under 40% shooting from the floor as the Tigers outscored the Tar Heels by nine points in the final 9:21 of the game. Clemson also forced 17 UNC turnovers to secure a 63-50 victory on Tuesday.

“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Aamir Simms is doing everything for the Tigers. He leads Clemson with 12.3 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. He’s a candidate for the all-important high-post position, given his 52.1 field goal percentage and his team-leading 44 assists.

If Syracuse Wins: Syracuse starts up two touchdowns in the next football game.

If Syracuse Loses: How happy does Doug Gottlieb get as Syracuse continues to slowly fall off the bubble?

Fun Fact: Syracuse and Clemson went 46 years between playing their first and second games against each other. The two programs didn’t play again until 2007 in the NIT, with Clemson winning again over the Orange.
