National Signing Day: 2021 DE Chase Simmons signs with Syracuse

Dino & Co. flip the Coastal Carolina commit

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Since the early signing period takes care of most of the signings for a given class, National Signing Day doesn’t really give us much news anymore. Still, the Syracuse Orange do have more player(s) to sign on Wednesday. As we did during the early signing period, we’re posting profiles here on TNIAAM to introduce the new faces to the program. Next up is defensive end Chase Simmons, who was previously committed to Coastal Carolina before today.

Twitter feed: @chase_simmons02

Hometown: Little River, S.C.

Previous School: North Myrtle Beach

Stats: 6-foot-4, 240 lbs.

Commitment date: Today! He flipped from Coastal Carolina

Position: Defensive end

Ratings: Both 247Sports and ESPN give him three stars, while Rivals said two. Let’s see who winds up being right.

Other Offers: So he’d been committed to Coastal since November, but also had offers from Akron, Charlotte, Georgia State and Kent State.

Dino’s projected nickname: “The Myrtle Beach Mauler”

Player Breakdown: Simmons has decent size and speed coming off the edge, and that’s helped by his current weight of 240 pounds. To play defensive end for SU, he probably needs to add a few pounds, but he does present some interesting possibilities after a couple years in the program. Most interestingly, he has long arms and good hands that can be a disruptive force in this scheme (he was also a tight end in high school).
