Boston College Blog: BC Interruption
Rivalry: 32-22, Syracuse
Current Streak: 2, Boston College
First Meeting: One of the oldest northeast football rivalries got started early in 1924. Boston College traveled to Archbold Stadium and got rewarded by scoring zero points against the Orange. Syracuse took a 10-0 victory and the teams wouldn’t play again for another 20 years. The annual game between the programs began in 1971.
Last Meeting: Scoring wasn’t exactly at a focal point of last year’s game. The game featured JaCobian Morgan’s first start at quarterback, but the Orange and Eagles only combined for 29 points. Eventually, Boston College survived for a 16-13 victory in the Dome.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Dino Babers (sixth year, 28-40) | Boston College - Jeff Hafley (second year, 10-8)
Coach Bio: Hafley played collegiate football not far from Syracuse as he was a wide receiver for Siena in the capital region. He earned a masters at Albany and was a defensive assistant and secondary coach for the Great Danes from 2002 to 2005. Hafley then made stops at Pittsburgh and Rutgers before the NFL came calling. He took an assistant secondary coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 and became the secondary coach the following season. Hafley also took secondary coaching roles with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers before Ohio State named him co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2019. An impressive defensive season with the Buckeyes convinced the Eagles to give Hafley his first head coaching gig in his career.
Last Year: Boston College had to grind out some wins but eventually did enough to get to a 6-5 record, with four wins within one possession. The Eagles opted out of playing a bowl game last year.
Last Game: Malik Cunningham rushed for three touchdowns, which is all that Louisville needed to defeat Boston College 28-14. After winning all of their non-conference games, the Eagles have dropped all three ACC games so far.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: With no David Bailey, Pat Garwo has stepped up in his place to lead BC’s rushing attack. He’s averaging 6.1 yards per carry and has five touchdowns on the ground this season.
If Syracuse Wins: We’ll be pleased with their performance.
If Syracuse Loses: We’ll be disappointed in the result but still pleased with Sean Tucker’s performance.
Fun Fact: Speaking of Tucker, he’s five rushing yards away from breaking into the top ten in Syracuse single season rushing yards. The person he’d overtake? Floyd Little (#GiveTucker44).
