We judge ACC’s men’s basketball head coaches on their ‘sideline casual’ fits

No jacket, no tie, no fashion sense?

NCAA Basketball: Bryant at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

With the Syracuse Orange basketball season without a game for weeks now, we are going to use this time to check in with the other ACC men’s basketball head coaches to see how they’re handling the “no jacket, no tie” agreement. Consider this a substitute for the unfortunately skipped ACC football kickoff coaches suit rankings last fall.

Jim Christian- Boston College Eagles

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Boston College Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

You could have predicted that Jim would break out the Dockers to go with his 14 zip. Giving off very High School coach vibes which is where Jim will be patrolling the sidelines next winter.

Brad Brownell- Clemson Tigers

NCAA Basketball: Maryland at Clemson Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

The Vice Principal has his Tigers playing well and he’s going with the strong college football look here. Polo, khakis, and wearing the mask incorrectly might be why he’s getting some of the Clemson football magic carrying over to the hardwood.

Mike Krzyzewski - Duke Blue Devils

NCAA Basketball: Duke at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Coach K going with the dark pants is a savvy veteran move. His US Olympic experience means he’s got experience with the casual sideline but going black to match his Nikes.

Leonard Hamilton- Florida State Seminoles

NCAA Basketball: Florida State at Clemson Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

Smooth Lenny Ham isn’t going to mind what dress code you pick. I mean he looks so relaxed you might think he was one of the administrators checking out the game rather than the head coach.

Josh Pastner- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Georgia Tech Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Credit to Pastner for going with the face shield and promoting safety but more importantly check out the school synergy there. I mean that looks like an engineer so his bosses in Atlanta must be thrilled.

Jim Larranaga - Miami Hurricanes

NCAA Basketball: Florida Gulf Coast at Miami-Florida Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Every photo I looked at for this piece had Larranaga in a post that resembles Jim Boeheim. It’s really uncanny and you know it’s too bad Jim Christian won’t last 30 more years at BC because he’d end up looking like these other Jims.....then again maybe it’s better off he won’t be around.

Roy Williams- North Carolina Tar Heels

NCAA Basketball: North Carolina at Georgia Tech Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Points for the sweater vest especially when we see Roy went with an argyle one at another game. We’re taking away points for those pants. Daggumit Roy you can afford to get them tailored.

Kevin Keatts- NC State Wolfpack

Unfortunately our photo database doesn’t have any recent photos of the man known for his stylish footwear. Here’s a look at Keatts going PGA Tour with the black sleeves which would go well with some black loafers but we’ll have to rely on NC State fans to confirm his shoe selection.

Mike Brey- Notre Dame Fighting Irish

We’ve poked fun at Brey’s convention casual look the last few years. The five o’clock shadow and lack of tie but on Saturday he went and changed our position by doing this over the weekend

We certainly don’t want every ACC HC doing this but we applaud you Mike Brey

Jeff Capel- Pittsburgh Panthers

NCAA Basketball: Gardner-Webb at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

When we started this we thought Capel might be one of the coaches who’d make the best adjustment to the casual look. Look at those pants though. Why are they so wrinkled? Were they stuffed in the bottom of his backpack? Are they wind pants? Seriously what is going on Jeff?

Jim Boeheim- Syracuse Orange

NCAA Basketball: Northeastern at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Jim looks so much more comfortable in the 1/4 zip but we’d certainly suggest a darker colored khaki. Strong Fall Sunday afternoon on the links vibes from Boeheim this year.

Tony Bennett- Virginia Cavaliers

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Virginia Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

We don’t think about Tony Bennett as being cool but this might be runner-up to Leonard Hamilton.

Mike Young- Virginia Tech Hokies

NCAA Basketball: AFR Hall of Fame Tip-Off-South Florida at Virginia Tech David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Not much to say about Mike Young other than we’re glad to be watching him on the sidelines instead of Sweatin’ Buzz.

Steve Forbes- Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Another coach who doesn’t appear in our photo database but from this shot we’re thinking Forbes is coaching the Wake offensive line than their basketball team.....or maybe that’s what he tells folks in Winston-Salem when he’s making a coffee run.

So there you have all the looks. We’re going with Leonard Hamilton, Tony Bennett and Mike Brey for our top three. Who do you think is adjusting to this new casual look best? Let us know in the comments
