NC State Blog: Backing the Pack
Rivalry: 7-6, Syracuse
Current Streak: 3, NC State
First Meeting: December 4, 1990 featured the first matchup between Syracuse and NC State at the Carrier Dome. The Orange won 86-79 off 24 points and 17 rebounds from junior Dave Johnson.
Last Meeting: Joe Girard scored a career-high 30 points (on 1-of-10 shooting from three, somehow) and Quincy Guerrier added 16 points and 10 rebounds, but Elijah Hughes exited the game after three minutes with an injury. Without their star, the Orange struggled to keep up with NC State down the stretch as the Wolfpack won 79-74 on February 11, 2020. NC State shot 52.1% from the floor while SU only shot 39.1% from the floor.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Jim Boeheim (45th year, 1,074-404) | NC State - Kevin Keatts (4th year, 72-41)
Coach Bio: Keatts played his collegiate ball at D-III Ferrum College before starting his coaching career as an assistant at Southwestern Michigan for a season. He then moved to Hargrave Military Academy to take an assistant job for two seasons before being promoted to head coach. Keatts stayed for two seasons before taking an assistant job at Marshall. After two years, he returned to the head coaching role at Hargrave for an additional eight seasons.
Keatts then moved to Louisville as an assistant in 2011, where he stayed for three years and was part of the now-vacated 2013 Cardinals national championship team. Keatts then took his first D-1 head coaching job at UNC Wilmington, where he qualified for the NCAA tournament in two out of his three seasons with the Seahawks. Keatts took the NC State job in 2017 and made the NCAA tournament with the Wolfpack in his first season. NC State has won at least 20 games every season under Keatts.
Last Year: NC State won only one game versus a ranked opponent in 2019-20, but that win was a blowout victory over No. 6 Duke 88-66. The Blue Devils would get revenge later in the season as the Wolfpack finished 10-10 in conference play, good enough for the five-seed in the ACC tournament. NC State beat Pittsburgh in its first matchup of the tournament, but would be denied a rubber game against Duke in the following round due to the event’s cancellation.
Last Game: 24 points off of 20 turnovers allowed NC State to take an initial lead against Wake Forest. That was big enough to see out a 72-67 victory for the Wolfpack, but NC State lost leading scorer Devon Daniels to an ACL injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Without Daniels, the attention turns to Jericole Hellems. The forward becomes NC State’s leading scorer among regular starters with 11.8 points per game and second-leading rebounder with 5.4 boards per game. He averaged the second-most field goal attempts on the Wolfpack behind Daniels.
If Syracuse Wins: The power of John Gillon flows through us all.
If Syracuse Loses: Can we get Reddit to invest in Syracuse stocks to raise its value in time for tournament selection?
Fun Fact: Starting with Sunday’s game against NC State, Syracuse begins a stretch of seven straight games on the ACC Network. The next Orange game to not feature on the ACC Network doesn’t come until February 22 with SU’s contest against Duke.
