An offseason full of departures doesn’t appear to be over just yet. On Wednesday, walk-on quarterback Drew Gunther announced he was entering the transfer portal.
Thank you Syracuse, I learned a lot in my time there. I will miss my brothers. After much prayer and thought, I have decided to enter the transfer portal. pic.twitter.com/aRcWrCjFFO— Drew Gunther (@drewgunther11) August 19, 2020
In his first season on campus, Gunther redshirted for the Orange, but with more quarterbacks added to the roster over the offseason, his potential path to the field was getting more difficult. Gunther originally arrived at Syracuse after backing out of a walk-on commitment to Virginia Tech, but had scholarship offers at the FCS level (including nearby Albany), so he does have the talent to catch on somewhere.
His departure means there’s currently one walk-on QB on the SU roster — freshman Luke MacPhail — plus five on scholarship. The same will hold true next year with Rex Culpepper graduating and 2021 commit Justin Lamson coming aboard.
Gunther is the latest transfer this offseason in a decent-sized line of them. Garrison Johnson and Cameron Jordan announced their departures within the last month or so, and Kadeem Trotter, Juan Wallace, Allen Stritzinger and (walk-on) James Cherry have all left as well.
Good luck going forward, Drew!
