It had been more than a week since the Syracuse Orange football team landed a 2021 commit. However, right before everyone takes off for the long weekend, the “drought” appears to be over. Three-star defensive end Jatius Geer announced his commitment to SU on Thursday.

Geer, from Honea Path, S.C. (Belton-Honea Path High School) is a big player at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds already. He’s a capable edge rusher and given his length, could potentially be employed in a hybrid end/linebacker role once he gets to Syracuse given the nature of this new 3-3-5 scheme. Along with an offer from the Orange, he also had offers from Georgia Tech, Kansas State, UCF, Memphis and Temple (among others). He’s also the second South Carolina prospect to join this class, joining wide receiver Kendall Long.
With Geer’s commitment, Syracuse is now at 13 players for the class of 2021 so far, including eight on the defensive side of the ball — and potentially five defensive linemen already. Along with Geer, SU also has verbal pledges from ends Hayden Nelson and Derek McDonald.
Syracuse may not be done securing commitments this week, either. Three-star QB target Justin Lamson is set to make his decision on Friday, and is largely making a choice between SU and Louisville. Securing a quarterback at this juncture would be a huge relief given how things have gone for the last few recruiting classes now.
But welcome aboard, Jatius! Highlights below for those curious:
