Check another open date off the list for future Syracuse Orange football schedules. Syracuse will host the Wagner Seahawks on September 24, 2022 to complete that season’s non-conference slate.
Along with Wagner, SU will travel to Connecticut on September 10 and host Purdue on September 17, while Notre Dame comes to the Carrier Dome at a date TBD.
The Orange last faced Wagner in 2018 — a 62-10 victory that saw Eric Dungey toss five touchdowns and Dontae Strickland run in two. Andre Cisco also picked off two passes, while Trill Williams scored a touchdown on a blocked punt. SU was up 21-7 after one quarter, then rolled from there.
This will be the third trip to the Dome for Wagner overall, and since SU joined the ACC. The Seahawks lost a 54-0 game to ‘Cuse back in 2013 and then suffered the aforementioned drubbing a couple seasons ago.
Wagner went 1-11 in 2019, with the lone win over LIU. They also lost to UConn by just three in the season opener. That probably says more about the Huskies than it does Wagner.
As mentioned, this completes the 2022 non-conference schedule, and we now know all 12 opponents for that season. The home/away breakdown, for those curious:
Home: Purdue, Wagner, Notre Dame, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Virginia
Away: UConn, Boston College, Clemson, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest
Tough, but interesting collection of teams there.
Syracuse now has completed schedules for 2021, 2022 and 2026, with a single opening left to fill in 2023 and 2025. I remain concerned about 2024, but getting games (even FCS games) locked in is still some progress.
