Get to Know Your Orange Man: #54, OL Austin Chandler

Another strong backup on the line

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Austin Chandler

Position: Offensive Lineman

Year: (Redshirt) Junior

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 312 lbs.

Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.

High School: Loyola

2019 stats: Chandler backed up Evan Adams at the left guard spot last season. He played 25 snaps total.

2020 projections: Chandler will probably still be in a backup position come the fall, but given the uncertainty at right guard, maybe he can sneak into the starting rotation at some point. No matter what, he’s probably a lock for the two-deep.

How’d he get here?: He joined SU as a preferred walk-on, turning down offers from Stetson and the University of San Diego.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Two stars all around.

Money quote: Sure he didn’t get a scholarship offer from Syracuse. But Mike Lynch flying out to L.A. to talk with Chandler did the trick.

“A lot of schools talk about how they treat walk-ons like scholarship players, but him coming out really showed me Syracuse meant it.”

Twitter feed: @iamachandler

Tweets of wonder: Chandler doesn’t really tweet, but he was on the Floyd train in Mayweather vs McGregor. At least he picked the winner

hat movie would Dino recommend for him?: How about a classic? “Sunset Boulevard” is based, like many movies, around Chandler’s hometown of Los Angeles — specifically the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. And I guess everyone on SU’s roster is ready for their close-up.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Chandler’s uncle is former University of Oregon and New Orleans Saints running back Ricky Whittle, who had 22 career touchdowns with the Ducks.

Let’s get a look at ya: Nothing like the good ol’ recruiting tape.
