Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come to open the voting process for the most important category of the S.O.B. (Syracuse Orange basketball) Awards: Best walk-on.

The walk-ons rarely get much credit. These guys pay full tuition, have the daunting task of defending high-level, D1 players in practice every day and they have to deal with Jim Boeheim. Not exactly a cakewalk.

They might not get the chance to showcase their talent, but rest assured, these guys would clean your clock on the basketball court. And by these guys I’m mostly referring to Brendan Paul.

This year’s candidates include:

Nick Giancola: 6-foot-5 forward

Career accomplishments: Being related to Jim Boeheim. Getting playing time during the team’s preseason trip to Italy. Appearing in games against Bucknell, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Pittsburgh and North Carolina.

Chris LaValle: 5-foot-11 junior guard

Career accomplishments: Balled at West Genny in high school. Dished out two helpers against Bucknell.

Brendan Paul: 6-foot-2 guard

Career accomplishments: Being able to hoop (not your every day walk-on). Hit two 3s in Italy against two different opponents. Became a Syracuse legend by burying a three in the closing seconds at Pittsburgh with a 20 point lead.

Shaun Belbey: 5-foot-10 guard

Career accomplishments: Was a member of the 2016 Final Four team. Earned a scholarship for the 2019-20 season. Scored against Boston University in his sophomore year. Had a steal, assist and bucket against Cornell in his junior year.
