In the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Rutgers University announced that the Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse game vs. the Scarlet Knights will occur as scheduled, but spectators will not be in attendance.
In a recent statement, Rutgers said:
“...The health of our student-athletes, coaches and staff is our primary concern... Observe best practices and directives as set forth by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). All Rutgers University Athletics home competitions will take place as scheduled without spectators. Credentialed media will be accommodated.”
At the time of this writing, the New York and New Jersey area have 173 confirmed cases of Coronavirus. Top-ranked Syracuse will take on 2-4 Rutgers Saturday at 1 p.m. Whether you’d been planning to go or not, you can now only watch the game on BTN Plus.
Looking forward, coronavirus could create similar environments for the Orange and most other athletic teams around the country. Duke, SU’s opponent on March 22, has already suspended in-person classes and gatherings of more than 50 people. The school has stated they’ll be issuing further guidance on sports soon.
