Early signing period: What’s left for Syracuse football’s recruiting class of 2021?

The Syracuse Orange football team added 19 players during Wednesday’s early signing period. So as of right now, there are 92 scholarship players on the roster — though that number also includes seniors that don’t count against the total. Even without a firm grasp on the number of spots available, though, it’s still worth looking at the rest of this Orange class and the offeason overall.

Jaelin Moss, DT (Fairport, N.Y.)

Any other high school or JUCO prospects out there for Syracuse?

Not necessarily. Long-time target (DB) William Wells wound up signing with UCF on Wednesday, so he’s off the board. It also doesn’t appear that Navy commit Calvin Johnson has signed anywhere yet, though Mississippi State is the favorite if he flips.

On the JUCO front, OT Jacqui Graham is still out there, as is Anthony Belton — who’s announcing Friday. It would seem less likely Syracuse is his landing spot at this point given the fact that Dino Babers had his press conference seemingly recapping all of the early signing period additions.

Positions of need

I’ve stated this in a few places now, but the Orange should really be focused on these four spots this offseason. it doesn’t mean they can’t look elsewhere too. But at least one player at each of these positions would seem to be a must:

• Quarterback
• Outside receiver
• Offensive line
• Defensive line

You don’t need All-American candidates at these spots, but would be great to have a P5 starter-level player at each, and maybe an extra depth add on each side in the trenches.

Mississippi State Garrett Shrader is the name everyone’s looking for more updates on at QB, but we’re not the only suitors there. Maryland tackle Tyran Hunt is one of several offensive linemen we’ll likely pursue. This week’s news that transfers will be immediately eligible likely fuels an even greater influx of players in the transfer portal, provided (likely) it becomes permanent. And some of those may even be from Syracuse. But it also creates more opportunities for the Orange to potentially make adds. Maybe best to play the long game there with the holidays coming and players potentially wanting to wait on those decisions ‘til after all of that wraps up.
