Day & Time: Sunday, November 29, 2 p.m. ET
Location: Island Federal Arena, Stony Brook, N.Y.
Stony Brook Blog: N/A
Current Streak: 3-0 Syracuse
Teams Last Meeting: Back in 2017 at the Carrier Dome, the Seawolves forced the Orange into extra minutes, but ‘Cuse was able to lock in the overtime win, 81-70.
Orange Storylines: Syracuse is ranked No. 23/ No. 21 to start the season. Four of five starters from 2019-20 are returning for ‘Cuse, including Kiara Lewis, Emily Engstler, Digna Strautmane, and Amaya Finklea-Guity. And as one of the most exciting storylines this college basketball season: All-American Tiana Mangakahia will be back in the line-up after beating breast cancer last season.
Syracuse’s Last Game: The Orange fell to the then-ranked No. 5 Louisville Cardinals, 71-46, in the quarterfinals of the 2020 ACC Tournament on March 6. Kiara Lewis led ‘Cuse with 18 points and two steals. The NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, so the Orange ended the year with a 16-15 overall record.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Quentin Hillsman (15th year, 304-160) | Stony Brook - Caroline McCombs (sixth year, 115-71)
Opponent Coach Bio: McCombs played college basketball at Youngstown State, where she was a two-time Mid-Continent Conference (now known as The Summit League) Second Team and was on the All-Conference Tournament Team for three consecutive years from 1996 to 1998. After McCombs graduated, she played European professional basketball, competing in the Czech Basketball Federation. Following her playing career, McCombs held coaching stints at Pittsburgh, Valparaiso, Northwestern, and Auburn before joining Stony Brook in 2014.
Opponent Last Year: Last season, the Seawolves set a program-best 28-3 record, including 22-straight wins. Stony Brook went on to win both the American East Conference regular season and postseason championships. McCombs was named the America East Coach of the Year.
Opponent’s Last Game: Stony Brook’s 20-game home court winning streak came to an end in their 2020-21 season opener versus Fordham, 62-58, on Wednesday. Transfer guard Asiah Dingle led the Seawolves with 22 points.
Opponent Player’s to Watch: Stony Brook returns three of five starters from last season, including forward India Pagan, guard/forward Hailey Zeise, and guard Annie Warren. Pagan will be a player to watch out for, as she was named First Team All-Conference last season with 13.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
If Syracuse Wins: Always good to start the season on the right foot.
If Syracuse Loses: With only two non-conference games scheduled, the Orange really cannot afford to lose before facing Atlantic Coast Conference foes.
