While you spent the weekend worrying about the future of the Syracuse Orange football program you might have missed the fact that this weekend marked five years since Syracuse won two national titles in one weekend.
The Syracuse men’s cross-country team got things started when they won the program’s first title since 1951. They were followed the next day by field hockey who became the first Orange women’s program to win a NCAA Championship.
We were able to sit down with the top six runners from the Syracuse XC team together last night to talk about that magical season and their victory over the two-time defending champion Colorado Buffaloes. We learned how the team took the disappointment of their 5th place finish in 2014 and used it to fuel their training the following season. They also talk about trusting each other and their training/racing plan when it came time to toe the line.
Imagine giving it your all over 10km for a national title and not knowing if you’d won or not? The guys tell us about those surreal post-race moments and let us know which race that season brought out the most impassioned pre-race speech from Head Coach Chris Fox.
Here’s the stream for those who missed it. We get started about twenty minutes in:
Thanks again to Martin Hehir, Colin Bennie, Justyn Knight, Joel Hubbard, Dan Lennon and Philo Germano for spending some time with us relieving that magical season.
For those interested in joining Marty, Colin and former Orange women’s standout Paige Stoner there is a virtual option to the Marathon Project you can check out here and we’ll keep tabs on the pro careers of them and Justyn here at TNIAAM.
