Rivalry: 11-7, Louisville
Current Streak: 1, Louisville
First Meeting: 1985 marked a new era for the Cardinals as Howard Schnellenberger took over as head coach of the program. Schnellenberger had recently won the 1983 National Championship with Miami (FL), but he was joining a Louisville program that hadn’t achieved a winning season in eight seasons. The Orange took full advantage of that fact and rolled over the Cardinals in the Carrier Dome with a 48-0 win.
Last Meeting: A career-high five touchdown passes from Malik Cunningham helped Louisville soar to a 56-34 victory. Syracuse tried to make things interesting late in the game, but two interceptions thrown by Tommy DeVito didn’t help the Orange cause.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Dino Babers (fifth year, 24-33) | Louisville - Scott Satterfield (second year, 10-11)
Coach Bio: Satterfield played his collegiate ball as a quarterback at Appalachian State, where he helped lead the Mountaineers to an undefeated season during his senior campaign in 1995. He joined the Appalachian State coaching staff in 1998, becoming offensive coordinator in 2003. Satterfield briefly left the Mountaineers coaching staff between 2009 and 2011 before returning as offensive coordinator in 2012. He became head coach of Appalachian State in 2013 and led the program to four straight bowl games, including three wins. Satterfield left the program prior to coaching his fourth bowl game with the Mountaineers in order to take the reins at Louisville for the 2019 season.
Last Year: Satterfield continued his personal bowl streak in his first season with the Cardinals after an 8-5 campaign. Louisville won the Music City Bowl over Mississippi State 38-28. That capped off a successful bounce-back season after going 2-10 in 2018.
Last Game: The Cardinals couldn’t take advantage of a career-high 197 rushing yards from Cunningham as Louisville lost to Virginia 31-17. Of note, the Cardinals didn’t have starting running back Javian Hawkins and starting wide receiver Tutu Atwell available for the game. Hawkins would opt out of the season on Monday.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Atwell set a school record for receiving yards in a season with 1,275 in 2019. By his lofty standards, the Miami, Fla. native is having a down year in 2020 with 528 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. If he is available for Friday’s game, the wide receiver may look to do what Zay Flowers did against the Orange two weeks ago and avoid Ifeatu Melifonwu at all costs.
If Syracuse Wins: At this point any win will feel big for Syracuse.
If Syracuse Loses: We still ask the Pinstripe Bowl if we can play there in December. They might say no.
Fun Fact: Syracuse and Louisville played a regular season game in Tokyo during the 1989 season. The Orange won that game 24-13, although there are unconfirmed reports if the Orange team that played was actually the Hosei Orange.
