Not bad!

It’s been a busy week of Syracuse Orange men’s basketball news, and that trend continues on Wednesday. Without the in-person “Operation Basketball” event to kick off the 2020-21 ACC season, the league polled media (including TNIAAM!) remotely to make predictions around standings, All-ACC players and more.

First off, the Syracuse Orange were picked sixth in the media poll:

You’ll noticed a pretty solid gulf between No. 5 (Louisville) and No. 6 (Syracuse), but then a minimal difference between ‘Cuse and the ninth place team, Georgia Tech. On my own #disloyalidiot ballot, I slotted Syracuse in at ninth behind the top five you see above, plus Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech. Undoubtedly, some media folks bought into the hype that came with KenPom’s No. 29 ranking for SU.

Notably, Syracuse has five games against the bottom three teams in the conference, playing Pitt and Boston College twice each. “Thanks, protected rivalry setup!”

Full media standings below, in case your browser isn’t rendering the tweet (plus SEO purposes). The prediction from my own ballot is in parenthesis next to each name.

  1. Virginia Cavaliers (1)
  2. Duke Blue Devils (3)
  3. Florida State Seminoles (2)
  4. North Carolina Tar Heels (5)
  5. Louisville Cardinals (4)
  6. Syracuse Orange (9)
  7. Miami Hurricanes (7)
  8. NC State Wolfpack (12)
  9. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8)
  10. Clemson Tigers (6)
  11. Virginia Tech Hokies (10)
  12. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11)
  13. Pittsburgh Panthers (13)
  14. Boston College Eagles (14)
  15. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (15)

No Syracuse player made the All-ACC first- or second-team, but if we’d been asked for second-team votes, I would’ve given one to Buddy Boeheim. Florida State’s Scottie Barnes was named preseason freshman of the year. UNC’s Garrison Brooks was preseason player of the year.

What do you think? Too high for Syracuse? Too low? Should I not get a vote for next year? Leave your own projections below.
