Last Meeting: Syracuse dropped their last matchup to Georgia Tech last season by a score of 65-55 in Atlanta.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Quentin Hillsman (14th season, 296-152 at SU). Georgia Tech - Nell Fortner (1st season, 13-3 at Tech)
Coach Bio: Nell Fortner has had a pretty remarkable career in basketball. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi where she was also a star high school player. She earned a dual scholarship to play both basketball at volleyball at the University of Texas. After graduation, she coached high school basketball at Killeen high school in Texas before going to Stephen F. Austin as an assistant. In 1990, she went to Louisiana Tech to serve as an assistant and held that position until 1995. After her time in the ‘Bayou State’, she went on to become an assistant coach for the USA National team for a year. In 1996, she became the head coach at Purdue, but that only lasted one year because she then took over the reigns as the USA National Team head coach at the end of the season. She coached the national team from 1997-2000, and won the gold medal in Athens. She was 101-14 as the USA coach, which is the all time wins leader currently. Following the Olympics, she took over as head coach and GM of the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. Following the 2003 season, she resigned to coach at the Auburn, bringing her back to the college game. She was at Auburn until 2012 before she was let go, and decided to stop coaching and become an analyst for ESPN. In 2019, she accepted the head coaching position at Georgia Tech.
Last Year: The Yellow Jackets finished last season at 17-13, going 7-9 in the ACC including a win over Syracuse. They did not participate in a postseason tournament.
Last Game: Georgia Tech won a thriller vs. Clemson at home, 49-47. The Jackets shot just 28% from the field in the win.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Jasmine Carson could be a problem for the Orange today. She made four three-pointers in her last game and has had a pretty solid season. The sophomore guard has the ability to put up big numbers, but hopefully she doesn’t pick today to have another good game.
If Syracuse Wins: Really good win over a pretty good team, especially after laying an egg last time out. These are the games Syracuse needs to win now in order to get into the tournament come March.
If Syracuse loses: Panic button? We knew this year was going to be tough for a lot of reasons, but this one would sting because we would drop back down to .500.
Fun Fact: Tonight’s broadcast of the game will be handled by all women for the pregame, in-game and halftime commentary. It will feature current Syracuse students as well as Syracuse graduates.
