‘Are you there, Troy? It’s me, Facebook’: Volume 1

Let me start by saying that some of you wanted this. So whatever happens next is just as much your fault as it is mine.

I’d also like to point out that this is not an endorsement of Facebook — arguably ground zero for the current online hellscape we’re all inhabitants of in one form or another. Rather, this article’s premise was borne by the fact that no corner of that website is safe from a brand of ill-informed, angry Boomer-ism, even the comment section for articles posted on TNIAAM’s own page.

While plenty of readers are fairly well-meaning, many are there for the now-standard level of Facebook discourse that allows any participant to willfully ignore facts, niceties and of course the links themselves, in favor of shouting whatever it is they think in whatever direction they choose. It’s almost the Syracuse.com comment section on steroids, if such a nightmare were to ever come to fruition.

Though I typically avoid even looking over there, for the sake of my own sanity, I’ve plunged my hand into the filth to come up with some of the best work over there for your enjoyment. Unlike Dead Letters, which this inevitably takes some cues from, I’m not directly shaming the commenters here. And I’d ask that you avoid taking it upon yourself to do so too, please.

We get it, some people don’t like the “how Syracuse finishes X-X” series...

“Whoever made this statement sure hope you don’t plan on watching any of the games or following them. Dumb statement. You haven’t even seen them play.”

If you haven’t seen them play, how would planning not to watch any of the games fix that fact?

This made me chuckle, admittedly. I don’t really have an answer to the question, either.

“While I don’t believe this will actually happen, we’re spelling out how it could. We start with the fact that there are a LOT of toss-ups on this schedule and should most of them fall in the wrong direction, there’s a path to get there. I hear this logic from Syracuse fans here and there, and it’s almost entirely based on the fact that the 2003 men’s basketball team went unranked. Data shows that especially in football, the teams ranked near the top of the poll at the beginning are the ones there at the end. They “earn it” just as much if they succeed.

Still plenty of thoughts out there on Tyler Lydon’s decision to leave when he was a first round draft pick
