Get to Know Your Orange Man: #27, RB Garrison Johnson

The Texas runner helps reconstruct the Lone Star State pipeline.

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Garrison Johnson

Position: Running Back

Year: Freshman

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 237 lbs.

Hometown: Rosharon, Texas

High School: Manvel

2018 stats: For the fall 2018 season, as a senior, Johnson tallied 1,500 yards on the ground, 300 yards in the air and 28 touchdowns. I’m mildly surprised that he didn’t put up 30, just to keep everything as a round number.

2019 projections: He’ll be a redshirt candidate in a very crowded backfield, but can get into the strength and conditioning program and see where on the roster that he’s setting himself up for in the future.

How’d he get here?: He was recruited from Manvel by Kirk Martin, his former coach, and current Syracuse quarterbacks coach. Not a bad connection. Prior to the Orange, he was a commit to North Texas, before re-opening his recruitment, prior to National Signing Day.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Johnson had offers from Virginia, Nebraska, North Texas and others. He was a three-star prospect from the powers that handle that sort of thing.

Money quote: He’s got confidence, I’ll give you that. —

“We’re going to beat Clemson, I know that already. We’re going to be undefeated. We’re going to be the Alabama now.”

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: It’s a stretch, and I think we’ve included most other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies before, but 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron included Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Pietro Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver. Though Johnson is more of a power back, it seemed a fitting connection for a ball carrier.

Interesting nugget o’ interest: Coach Martin was effectively recruiting him from even back in 2017 when he was coaching him, then jumped back on the recruiting trail when he decommitted from North Texas. That led to a visit from Coach Babers and the rest is history.
