Get to Know Your Orange Man: #10, QB Drew Gunther

Syracuse added a second passer this offseason, if you were paying attention.

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Drew Gunther

Position: Quarterback

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 203

Hometown: Chester Springs, Pa.

High School: Malvern Prep

2018 stats: Threw for 2,136 passing yards with 24 touchdowns in an 11-0 season — the second in Inter-Ac League history. Also set the conference single-game record with 386 passing yards.

2019 projections: Redshirt redshirt redshirt. There are a number of guys ahead of Gunther on the depth chart so it’s safe to say we won’t see him suit up this season.

How’d he get here?: Gunther was brought on to the team as a preferred walk-on after backing out of a previous commitment to walk on at Virginia Tech. Gunther also held offers from Albany, Brown, Fordham, Georgetown and Virginia Military Institute.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Unrated by major recruiting publications.

Money Quote: Here’s Gunther’s former head coach, Dave Gueriera, on Gunther’s maturity on the field.

“He really is older than a 17- or 18-year-old kid,” Gueriera told Syracuse.com. “That’s what I’m super impressed with. It’s like having another coach on the field.”

Tweets of wonder: Gunther’s commitment Tweet to Orange Nation.

What movie would Dino recommend for him?: An oldie but a goodie, Drew Barrymore in ‘E.T.’ is a must-watch for all the Drews in the world.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Did Gunther’s high school (Malvern Prep) sound familiar to you? That’s because former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib played his high school days in the same Pennsylvania stadium.
