Name: Clayton Welch
Position: Quarterback
Year: (Redshirt) Senior
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 243
Hometown: Chico, Calif.
High School: Chico
2018 stats: None. He did get in toward the end of the Wagner game, but didn’t record any statistics.
2019 season projections: Welch likely won’t see many snaps if Tommy DeVito stays healthy (at least in non-garbage time), but he is the current backup on the roster. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a starting quarterback stay fully healthy though, so Welch better keep the arm warmed up.
How’d he get here?: He spent two years at JUCO Butte College in Oroville, Calif. before transferring to the Orange. After redshirting, he led the Roadrunners to the conference championship as a freshman, garnering team MVP honors.
What’d recruiting sites say?: Unrated.
Money quote: His teammates regarding Welch taking over the number two QB role —
“There’s no shortage of confidence,” SU defensive end Kendall Coleman said of Welch. “If anybody thinks he can do it, it’s Clayton. But I love that about the kid. He’s not going to back down or cower to any challenge, and that’s awesome.”

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Sticking with the all time classics, Babers may hit the way back machine again, with 1939’s Gone with the Wind, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. The cinema classic was filmed in Welch’s hometown of Chico.
Interesting nugget o interest: As noted in the Syracuse.com article linked earlier, Welch grew up literally down the street from Aaron Rogers and proceeded to follow in his JUCO footsteps to Butte College.
Let’s get a good look at ya: Hudl video from his Butte days.
