Get to Know Your Orange Man: #34, S Eric Coley

Not just a coach’s son...

NCAA Football: Camping World Bowl-West Virginia vs Syracuse Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Eric Coley

Position: Defensive back

Year: (Redshirt) Sophomore

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 186

Hometown: Manlius, N.Y./Portage, Mich.

High School: Fayetteville-Manlius/Portage Northern

2018 stats: Coley was able to see action at safety in six different games, making three tackles against both Wake Forest and Wagner, respectively.

2019 projections: Safety’s pretty crowded for the Syracuse Orange, with Andre Cisco and Evan Foster entrenched as starters, plus Antwan Cordy potentially returning and plenty of competition from guys like Devon Clarke, Cornelius Nunn, Cam Jonas, etc. But at the moment, he’s listed on the two-deep depth chart and would be able to jump into the rotation to help keep some fresh legs out on the field.

How’d he get here?: Coley’s a smart guy, opting for Syracuse over offers from schools like Rutgers, Utah State and Bowling Green.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars from 247Sports and ESPN, but only two from Rivals. Booooo.

Money quote: Always what you want to hear from a safety.

“I feel like that’s what I was recruited for. I come up and hit. That’s my thing.”

Tweets of wonder: If you weren’t already aware by this point, Coley’s stepfather is Syracuse assistant Vinson Reynolds.

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Cole Hauser played Carter Verone in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He was a Miami druglord and a character I oddly remember pretty vividly despite having not seen the movie since its 2003 release.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Like several Syracuse players, Coley is a pretty speedy dude. As a freshman at Portage Northern, he was rookie of the year and sprinter of the year. Not too shabby.
