Get to Know Your Orange Man: #38, DB AJ Calabro

MOAR DEFENSIVE BACKS

NCAA Football: Central Michigan at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: AJ Calabro

Position: Defensive back

Year: (Redshirt) Freshman

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 198

Hometown: Farmingdale, N.J.

High School: Saint John Vianney

2018 stats: Redshirt season, so no playing time for him.

2019 projections: The walk-on’s probably unlikely to see the field on defense for the Syracuse Orange given the long list of scholarship defensive backs already on the roster. Special teams is an option, however.

How’d he get here?: Though he could’ve wound up in New York anyway by playing for Wagner or Pace, he preferred to walk on at Syracuse instead.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Nada.

Money quote: His former athletic director shares that AJ’s a pretty smart dude, and wanted to prioritize academics as part of his decision to play football.

“He’s a very intelligent young man and he realizes that he wants to put his academics first. He and his family were thrilled about Syracuse. They loved the opportunity to go to school there.”

Tweets of wonder: Though he didn’t get on the field last year, Calabro still made his presence known as a member of the scout team. Special teams coach Justin Lustig gave him props for his work the week of the Boston College game:

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: A.J. Cook starred in “Final Destination 2,” which you may recall for one of the best car crash scenes in cinematic history. Is Dino a horror movie guy? He doesn’t necessarily seem like one.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Students from his high school was featured as part of “Project Runway” back in 2008 when designers had to create modern prom dresses for them as part of a challenge.

Let’s get a good look at ya: If you’re going to have one highlight out there, an interception clip’s not a bad one to have (if you’re a defensive back).
