Get to Know Your Orange Man: #13, QB Tommy DeVito

New, 2 comments

The redshirt sophomore has some big shoes to fill at quarterback, but looks up for the challenge.

NCAA Football: ACC Media Days Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Tommy DeVito

Position: Quarterback

Year: (Redshirt) Sophomore

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 212

Hometown: Cedar Grove, N.J.

High School: Don Boscoe Prep

2018 Stats: DeVito played in eight games for the Syracuse Orange last year, with his most significant action coming against Florida State, North Carolina and Notre Dame. On the season, he completed 50.6% of his passes for 525 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions, plus a rushing TD and a punt of 37 yards. Most impressively: He guided SU to a second half win over FSU at the Dome, and piloted the comeback to beat UNC mid-year.

2019 Projections: While Eric Dungey put up big numbers in Dino Babers’s offensive system, DeVito is actually a better fit for what Dino typically wants to do. That could mean even more eye-popping numbers for the first-time starter this season, though there will be some additional growing pains, for sure. It would seem likely he can get close to 3,000 passing yards including a bowl game, provided he stays healthy.bowl game.

How Did He Get Here?: Syracuse recruited DeVito hard early and got a commitment in April of 2016. Afterward, he wound up wowing evaluators at Elite 11, getting upgraded to four stars by some evaluators and fielding offers from the likes of Boston College, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Texas A&M and Washington State (among others). He believes in loyalty, however, so he was happy to stick with SU.

What Did Recruiting Sites Say?: 247Sports and ESPN said four stars, and ESPN rated him one of the 300 best players in the class of 2017. Rivals said three stars. Fine.

Money Quote: Step one of Italian storytelling is establishing that you’re Italian.

“... We’re Italian, so we’re all about trust. When we had a conversation with Coach Babers and the rest of the coaching staff, we had a lot of trust and belief with them. My gut told me to go with it, I went with it. That’s why I’m with Syracuse.”

Tweets of Wonder: Despite being a first-time starter, Tommy took center stage at the ACC Football Kickoff.

What Movie Would Dino Recommend for Him?: We’ve gone with Goodfellas the last two years, so this time around, we opt for 2014’s Jersey Boys. Vincent Piazza plays Tommy DeVito in the Four Seasons/Frankie Valli biopic based on the musical of the same name. SU’s Tommy DeVito has likely heard every reference there is to make about this movie, we’re sure.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Tommy and class of 2019 signee David Summers actually share the same private coach, Leon Clarke.

Let’s Get a Good Look Atcha: When you don’t start a game but still get your own ACC highlight reel, that’s a sign of a pretty good debut.
