Get to Know Your Orange Man: #42, LB Tyrell Richards

“Get to know” a name you may be hearing a whole lot this season.

NCAA Football: Wagner at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Tyrell Richards

Position: Linebacker

Year: (Redshirt) Sophomore

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 236

Hometown: Brampton, Ont.

High School: Clarkson Secondary School

2018 Stats: In his first action at Syracuse, Richards made the most of his time. He started out playing a lot of special teams, but also jumped in at defensive end where he showed off some impressive skills, even in limited time. He was credited with 16 tackles on the year, with three of those coming as sacks (vs. Wagner, BC and WVU). Tyrell also collected an interception against Wagner as well.

2019 Projections: Richards is a rising star on the roster and will push for time at linebacker this year. In a 4-3 scheme, he’ll likely man the third starting spot alongside Andrew Armstrong and Lakiem Williams. We’ll see what happens in the 4-2-5, though linebacker is the most fluid depth chart situation on the roster right now.

How’d He Get Here?: Tyrell camped down at SU, and that was enough to sell him on the program by June of 2016. The only other FBS program to offer him was Buffalo, given their similar proximity to the Great White North.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: The 247Sports composite gave him a three-star ranking, and he was one of Canada’s top five prospects for 2017. We’ll take it!

Money Quote: It’s some pretty high praise when Kendall Coleman says he could learn a thing or two from your game as a freshman. This was from a Stephen Bailey feature on Richards this spring.

“He’s not the kind of guy that really worries too much about who he’s going up against and stuff like that, what his abilities are. It’s really just: he sees it, attacks it and goes. And that’s something that I value and I could pick up from his game.”

Tweets Of Wonder: Getting a welcome message from Tebucky Jones isn’t a bad way to start your time with the Syracuse Orange program.

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: English actor Tyrell Davis was perhaps best known for his role as Arnold Champion-Cheney in “Strictly Unconventional.” The 1930 drama is the story of Champion-Cheney’s wife, Elizabeth, who finds her marriage to him disappointing and seeks advice on adultery from her mother. They’d make this a rom-com today.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: It’s not every day your players are recognized as one of the best in their home country. Richards was named to Canada’s Under-19 team at the American World Football Championships (which are a thing!).
