The Big East may be a “new” conference since the basketball-only schools broke off in 2013-14, but its old records still stand — something that allows the Syracuse Orange to continue to hang over its previous league a bit.
Among the many records SU holds is the career scoring record, currently belonging to Lawrence Moten, who put up 1,405 (in conference play) in four years. But as Mike Waters points out on Syracuse.com, that mark is about to be put to the test this coming season. Marquette’s Markus Howard is just 335 points behind him, and put up 448 points in league play as a junior last year.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter much whether Moten or any Syracuse player owns old Big East records. That was our old conference, and we’ll set new records in the ACC that hopefully stand the test of time for a bit. Moten, in particular, holds another record that probably isn’t going anywhere: the career scoring record for Syracuse. There, he’s nearly 200 points ahead of Derrick Coleman, and no active member of the program is even sniffing the top of the list after Tyus Battle (1,647 points), Frank Howard (992) and Oshae Brissett (976) all departed this offseason.
In Waters’s piece, Moten said he’d like to give Howard the game ball if and when he breaks the record — a nice gesture if it can happen. However, knowing the bad blood toward Syracuse that remains in the Big East, something tells me that plan could never come to fruition.

Howard has scored 1,070 points in Big East play during his first three years at Marquette. That puts him just 335 points behind Moten. “If he breaks the record,’’ Moten said in an interview on Monday, “I want to be there to give him the game ball.’’
2019 ACC power rankings: Nobody’s overtaking Clemson, but please read anyway (SB Nation)
The ACC is the anti-C-USA. It’s got an obvious national title contender and plenty of teams that could, if they get breakthroughs, play at a top-25 level or so. It also has zero teams within 16 points of Clemson — the Tigers’ projected S&P+ rating is plus-29.9. Miami’s is plus-13.9, and the Tigers don’t even play the Canes. FSU is the only top-45 conference foe on the schedule.

Also, the ACC will play in the Outback Bowl in place of the Big Ten any year in which the Big Ten has a team in the Orange Bowl.

Syracuse - Sept. 7 at Maryland: A Week 2 trip to Maryland has serious trap-game potential. No, Maryland doesn’t figure to be Syracuse’s toughest test, but a road date early in the season against a Terps team with something to prove always sets up as a potential problem. But it’d be hard to blame the Orange for looking ahead a bit, too. A date with Clemson that could determine the ACC Atlantic awaits in Week 3. Dino Babers will have his work cut out for him keeping all eyes on Maryland.
NY Giants: Inside Eric Dungey’s intriguing NFL quest as a football player, not just a QB (NorthJersey.com)
“The thing I try to do is learn the offense from the quarterback perspective, and honestly, it’s really interesting,” Dungey said. “That way helps me learn the quarterback position from the tight end spot as well, and what’s required from all the spots. There’s no saying if and when I could move to different positions, so I’m trying to be flexible and versatile. I want to be ready to go if they want me at quarterback, but I need to be ready to go wherever they want me to play.”
